THE AARON CRAWFORD FOLK MUSIC PAGE
Folk music is both fun and easy to play. Folk songs generally are written by people with little or no musical background. Folk music is the oldest type of music known to man. The songs are passed on by oral tradition and not usually passed down through notation and sheet music. Folk songs are usually written about a particular subject, and not neccesarily to entertain. Subjects that were written in the past 50 years were written specifically about love, hate, crime, war, and other related subjects.
Because most of the Americans here are immigrants, American folk music is the melting pot of all types of folk music from other countries. Most of the countries that were meshed around to bring American folk music came from England, Scottland, Ireland, and France. Folk music also meshed with other types of music to create folk-rock, country, classical, and more types of music.
Most of the folk music was popular from 1950's-the late 1960's with such artist like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Crosby Stills and Nash, Neil Young, and more recently, artist like Suzanne Vega,Tracy Chapman and the Indigo Girls brought folk music back into the limelight. Even though folk music has lost its popularity in the past 25 years due to popular music, folk music has been around and will always be around forever. There is a folk show that I listen to on college radio station called The Front Porck on 91.3 fm WKNH, Keene, New Hampshire. So if you're in the New Hampshire area, listen in on Saturdays from noon-5, but if you're not in the Keene area, listen to it on the internet at www.WKNH.com. Also, listen to my radio show from 2-4pm on Sundays on the same station.
